Our Journey since 2000 till now
The journey of Communication DEALL began on November 1st, 2000, driven by a deep sense of urgency and the sheer determination to make a difference. At that time, the world was witnessing an alarming rise in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), yet there was a significant lack of structured, effective interventions. Faced with this overwhelming challenge, Dr. Prathibha Karanth, a passionate Speech Language Pathologist, knew something had to change. It was not just a professional challenge, but a personal mission to create a solution. Despite the odds, with no clear model to follow, she set out to build a comprehensive, holistic program—one that could transform lives and empower children with ASD to lead fulfilling, integrated lives.
Dr. Prathibha Karanth’s professional journey in understanding and dealing with neurogenic communication disorders began with her work with aphasics at NIMHANS, a pivotal experience that shaped her understanding of the neural basis of communication. It was here that she discovered the wider implications of the lack of /or disordered communication on one’s overall well-being. Her work with aphasics—individuals with language and communication disorders subsequent to a cerebral injury; made it clear that language and communication are not isolated skills but deeply interconnected with the broader well -being of the individual, be it a child or an adult. This insight led her to believe that intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities needed to be holistic, addressing not just language, but the entire spectrum of developmental needs.
What drove Dr. Prathibha Karanth to take action for children with ASD, was the urgent and persistent requests from parents. As more and more families reached out to her, seeking help and support for their children, she could not ignore their calls. The overwhelming demand for a structured, evidence-based program for children with ASD became impossible to overlook. It was these pleas from parents, coupled with her deep expertise and experience, that pushed her to create Communication DEALL—a program that would not only provide early intervention but also enable children to be integrated into mainstream education and society.
In 2000, Dr. Prathibha Karanth refocused her efforts, drawing on her years of clinical experience to develop a program that was ahead of its time—one that embraced a holistic developmental approach to autism intervention. She was pioneering a path that, nearly two decades later, the world would come to recognize as essential. Today, the research and methods she advocated for, are at the forefront of global autism intervention practices, aligning with findings that have only just caught up to the vision she set in motion 25 years ago. Her foresight was not merely a professional achievement—it was a commitment to a belief in every child's potential and the unwavering conviction that the right approach could change their world.
With grit and determination, Dr. Prathibha Karanth built Communication DEALL from the ground up, assembling an interdisciplinary approach at a time when such integration was unheard of. Every step was met with obstacles, yet each challenge fueled a greater resolve to press forward. The program, designed for children with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, began with nothing but a vision—and slowly, it started to show real promise. Over time, that promise blossomed into success as children began to flourish and integrate into mainstream schools, defying expectations and proving that change was not only possible but within reach.
As the program grew, so did the requests for help—from parents desperate for support, from professionals eager to learn, and from peers who believed in the mission. But the road wasn’t easy. It required not just hard work, but the raising of funds, rallying support from fellow professionals, and tirelessly advocating for a cause that many didn’t yet fully understand. Every phase was a test of resilience, but the belief in the children and families Dr. Prathibha Karanth served kept pushing her forward.
With each success, the dream expanded: to create a network of affiliates who could replicate the Communication DEALL model and reach even more children. What started as a solitary mission to help a few children in Bangalore became a movement, a collective effort that continues to inspire and empower others to build their own centers and spread this life-changing approach. Today, we are not just a program but a community—united by the conviction that every child deserves the opportunity to be understood, supported, and integrated into society.

Philosophy
At Com DEALL, we are driven by the philosophy that every child, regardless of his or her challenges, deserves the opportunity to thrive in an inclusive society. We believe that early intervention, personalized care, and a team approach are the keys to making a lasting impact in the lives of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Our core principles include:
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: At Communication DEALL, we believe that a holistic approach is essential for effectively supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. Our team is composed of a diverse group of professionals, each bringing their unique expertise to create a comprehensive intervention plan tailored to each child's needs. This includes specialists from fields such as speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, developmental psychology and early education.
- Group-Based Intervention with Individual Support: Our programs primarily focus on group interventions, bringing together children with similar skill sets to promote socialization, peer learning, and collaborative development. Social skills and interaction are fundamental to a child's growth, and our group settings foster these vital skills. However, if a child is not yet ready for group interaction or has unique challenges, we also provide individualized therapy to support his or her specific needs and help them progress at their own pace.
- Evidence-Based Practices and Commitment to Research and Innovation: At Communication DEALL, we firmly believe that ongoing research and innovation are essential for the continued success and evolution of our programs. We are committed to staying at the cutting edge of evidence-based practices, ensuring that our interventions remain effective and aligned with the latest scientific findings in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related developmental disabilities.
- Collaborating and advancing Communication DEALL: We also recognize the importance of collaboration with dedicated professionals who share our vision of advancing the field. As part of our core principles, we actively encourage and invite candidates who are passionate about conducting research, exploring new methodologies, and contributing to the ongoing development of Communication DEALL. If you are interested in pursuing research opportunities and helping us enhance our interventions, we welcome you to reach out and be part of this important work.
- Community and Family Involvement: At Communication DEALL, we believe that the success of our programs depends on the active involvement of families and local communities. We empower families with the knowledge and tools to support their child's development at home, ensuring consistent progress. In collaboration with the local schools, educators, and organizations, we want to create a supportive network that promotes inclusion and sustainability, enabling children with ASD to thrive in all aspects of life.

The Way Forward - Embracing Digitalization
As part of our commitment to innovation, we are embracing digitalization to enhance our reach and effectiveness. We developed a digital platform that will provide any therapist or family access to training materials, intervention resources, and a community of practitioners. This will allow for the consistent delivery of our programs across different locations, ensuring quality control and scalability
Our History

1st November 2000 marked the inauguration of the first Communication DEALL program.
The beginning of the program, no ordinary one, was a response to the need felt on the ground. A major catalyst in beginning the program on a trial basis was the increase in diagnosis of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This, coupled with several parental requests seeking Dr Prathibha Karanth’s help in providing intervention for their young children with autism. A survey (Ujwala Aluri, 1999-2000) of intervention / therapy services and facilities for children with ASD, guided by Dr Karanth, suggested a near total lack of concerted services for children with ASD / developmental disabilities, even in metropolitan cities like Bangalore. It was concluded that interdisciplinary intervention through a team approach under one roof was urgently needed to support children with Autism / Autism Spectrum Disorder.
On the other hand, it was also the outcome of:
(a) The understanding of the needs of children with developmental disabilities (through her background in Speech language pathology),
(b) Many years of clinical experience with adult aphasics (read more on this in the Program Manual written by Dr Karanth)
(c) And lastly, but definitely the most insightful and compelling – the decade long work with Tito Rajarishi Mukhophadyhay.
A combination of the above encouraged the beginning of an entirely indigenous program – Communication DEALL. The program was designed and geared to the socio-economic context of families in Bangalore. The Communication DEALL program was initially started at SRCISH, Bangalore as an experimental program with 12 children diagnosed with ASD and within the ages of 2 to 6 years. It aimed at integrating children with these disorders in regular school by providing them with intensive preschool intervention. The progress seen in the first batch of children enrolled in the Communication DEALL program ensured that the parents wouldn’t let go. More than half of children enrolled were mainstreamed into regular schools post intervention/therapy. The success led to increased motivation to continue the program.
Com DEALL celebrated 23 years in 2023! During the 23 years of running the Communication DEALL program, hundreds of children have been enrolled and have benefited. Along with the ever increasing awareness of autism/ Autism Spectrum Disorder, the increased need for early intervention and the constantly changing scientific understanding of ASD/Autism; the program has also been continuously evolving. This has further enhanced its efficacy. A controlled study conducted scientifically; using evidence based practice has helped establish the program’s efficacy (Karanth, Shaista and Srikanth, 2010).
As of now, intensive early intervention is the most promising approach for alleviation of these disorders. Successful integration of these children can only be achieved with adequate preparation in the preschool years. Intervention/Therapy for developmental disabilities is long term in nature, and has to be provided on a continuous basis over prolonged periods.
